Job Description for Cloud Platform Engineer

Cloud Foundations • Platform Engineering • Automation • Reliability

Position Summary

The Cloud Platform Engineer is responsible for building, operating, and enhancing cloud platforms that enable secure, scalable, and reliable delivery of cloud services (IaaS, PaaS, and platform services) to internal teams and government entities.

The role focuses on cloud foundations, platform services, automation, reliability, and self-service enablement, working across on-premise sovereign cloud and public cloud platforms. The engineer acts as a core member of the Cloud Platform team, enabling developers, operations, and service delivery teams to consume cloud services efficiently and securely.

Core Responsibilities

1. Cloud Platform Build & Operations

Build, operate, and support cloud platforms across:

  • Sovereign/private cloud
  • Public cloud environments (Azure, AWS, Oracle OCI – as applicable)

Deploy and manage shared cloud services such as:

  • Compute, storage, and networking services
  • Identity and access integrations
  • Monitoring, logging, and observability platforms

Ensure platform stability, scalability, and high availability.

2. Cloud Foundations & Landing Zones

Implement and operate cloud landing zones including:

  • Account/subscription structures
  • Network segmentation and connectivity
  • Security baselines and guardrails
  • Logging, monitoring, and auditing

Enforce platform standards, templates, and best practices.

3. Automation & Infrastructure as Code

Build and maintain automation using:

  • Terraform / Bicep / CloudFormation
  • Ansible and scripting (Python, Bash, PowerShell)

Develop reusable modules and templates for:

  • Platform provisioning
  • Environment setup (Dev/Test/Prod)
  • Self-service consumption

Support GitOps and CI/CD integration for platform changes.

4. Platform Security & Governance

Implement cloud security controls:

  • IAM, RBAC, least privilege
  • Network security and segmentation
  • Encryption at rest and in transit
  • Secure secrets and key management

Ensure compliance with:

  • Government security standards
  • Cloud security best practices
  • Organizational governance frameworks

5. Reliability, Monitoring & Operations

Implement monitoring, logging, and alerting for platform components.

Participate in incident response, root cause analysis, and remediation.

Improve platform reliability through:

  • Automation
  • Standardization
  • Proactive monitoring

Support DR, backup, and resilience testing for cloud platforms.

6. Enablement & Service Consumption

Enable application, DevOps, and service delivery teams to consume cloud platforms.

Provide technical guidance, documentation, and onboarding support.

Support migration and onboarding of workloads to cloud platforms.

Act as L3 support for complex cloud platform issues.

7. Documentation & Continuous Improvement

Maintain clear documentation for:

  • Platform architecture
  • Standard operating procedures (SOPs)
  • Automation modules
  • Service catalogs and usage guides

Continuously improve platform services based on feedback and metrics.

Required Experience

5-8 years of experience in cloud engineering, platform engineering, or infrastructure roles.

Hands-on experience with at least one major cloud provider:

  • Azure (preferred), AWS, or Oracle OCI

Experience building and operating shared cloud platforms.

Strong background in Linux and cloud networking fundamentals.

Skills & Competencies

Technical Skills

  • Cloud services (compute, networking, storage, IAM).
  • Infrastructure as Code (Terraform, Bicep, CloudFormation).
  • Automation and scripting (Python, Bash, PowerShell).
  • Monitoring and observability tools.
  • Understanding of containers and Kubernetes is an advantage.

Soft Skills

  • Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
  • Ability to work across multiple teams and stakeholders.
  • Clear documentation and communication skills.
  • Ownership mindset and operational discipline.

Preferred Certifications

  • Azure Administrator / Azure Engineer Associate
  • AWS SysOps Administrator
  • Oracle OCI Associate/Professional
  • Terraform Associate
  • ITIL v4 Foundation (advantage)
