HEAD OF DEPARTMENT - MATHEMATICS

Brief Overview of the Job Description:

The Head of Department provides educational leadership within the Mathematics Department and the wider School community. This leadership encompasses curriculum, pedagogy and professional growth and development of staff. The Head of Department is accountable to the principal. Responsibilities are to be carried out in accordance with the school ethos, values, policies, priorities and procedures. A love of teaching and learning, initiative, an optimistic outlook, great organisational skills, excellent interpersonal skills and a commitment to professional learning are all pre-requisites for the position.

Key Responsibilities:

• Plan the year’s academic work in advance in consultation with your subject teachers and hold meetings of your subject teachers at least once a month, review the work done during the month and assess the progress of the pupils and take remedial action for improvement, wherever required.
• Plan and specify a regular timetable for the scrutiny of pupils written work and home assignment and ensure that the assessment and corrections are carried out timely and effectively.
• Ensure a high-quality supportive learning environment where learner engagement and academic improvement are priorities.
• Be an active member of the Senior School Curriculum and Pedagogy committee.
• Liaise with team members to ensure that there is a seamless transition between the programs offered in Mathematics from Junior School to Senior School, with adherence to Curriculum requirements.
• Liaise with other departments to promote and be involved in STEM activities.
• Develop staff through facilitation of mentoring, professional dialogue and professional learning. Development of staff is focused on:
  • high impact and engaging classroom practice
  • capacity to respond to individual student needs
  • quality formative and summative assessment design
  • curriculum knowledge and design
  • self-management
  • administrative accountabilities
  • digital practices
  • developing high quality feedback for students
• Lead department implementation of annual KRA’s.
• Liaise with the Principal in relation to appointment of new staff.
• Provide guidance and facilitate development of newly appointed teachers.
• Co-ordinate the work of the department through well planned and regular meetings.
• Be responsible for the overall efficiency, professional attitude and morale of the department, and be responsible for helping staff to know how they can best contribute to the well-being of the students they teach.
• Work with staff to ensure compliance with, and understanding of, responsibilities in relation to School policies and guidelines.
• Actively participate in co-curricular activities.
• Communicate with students, colleagues and parents/guardians in a respectful, clear, caring and professional manner.
• Mentor and support faculty members in professional development and pedagogical strategies.
• Analyze student performance data to identify trends and areas for improvement.
• Promote the integration of technology into Mathematics lessons for enhanced learning outcomes.
• Ensure quality control of educational materials and resources used in the department.
• Lead and coordinate Mathematics-related competitions and events within the school.
• Conduct regular department meetings to collaborate on curriculum updates and best practices.
• Uphold the institution's commitment to child welfare and holistic development.

Qualifications:

• Master’s degree in mathematics.
• B.Ed. mandatory.
• Minimum 5 years of teaching experience, with at least 2 years in a leadership or HOD role.
