Currently we are Looking out Professionals for Our Prestigious Client

Client Name: - J. D. Jones & Co. (P) Ltd

Role Title: - Techno-Production Engineer – Spring-Energised Lip Seals

Location: - Howrah/Kolkata, West Bengal
Reporting Into: -
Production Manager / Head of Operations

About Client: -

Founded in 1923, J. D. Jones & Co. (P) Ltd is one of India's oldest and most respected fluid sealing manufacturers, headquartered in Howrah, West Bengal. Operating under the PACMAAN and ROLGARD brands across four manufacturing units, the company serves oil & gas, refineries, petrochemicals, power generation, and pump & valve OEM markets — with ISO 9001:2015 certification and approximately 350 employees.

JD Jones is a PTFE and fluoroplastics specialist. Our core sealing products are manufactured from PTFE and filled PTFE compounds. We are now establishing a dedicated spring-energised lip seal product line — a high-precision, high-value segment that builds directly on our existing PTFE machining and compression moulding capabilities.

ROLE OVERVIEW

We are hiring a Techno-Production Engineer to lead the manufacturing and technical development of our spring-energised PTFE lip seal product line. This role sits at the intersection of precision PTFE machining, spring selection and assembly, seal profile engineering, and customer application support.

Spring-energised seals (SES) are a technically demanding product: the PTFE sealing lip must be precisely machined to a defined profile, and the metallic energiser (canted coil, cantilever/finger, or V-spring) must be correctly selected, formed, and installed to deliver consistent radial or axial load across the full operating range. Getting this right demands deep process knowledge and meticulous quality control.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

1.   PTFE Seal Manufacturing & Process Management

Plan and execute daily production of spring-energised PTFE lip seals — U-cups, J-lips, V-cups, delta/AQ profiles, and custom geometries — to customer delivery and quality targets

Manage PTFE processing operations: compression moulding of billets/preforms, isostatic pressing, ram extrusion, skiving, and precision CNC machining of seal profiles from rod, tube, or billet stock

Control process parameters for PTFE sintering and post-processing: temperature profiles, pressure, dwell times, cooling rates — and their effect on dimensional stability and mechanical properties

Set up and optimise CNC lathes, milling centres, and skiving equipment for PTFE and filled-PTFE seal profiles; manage tooling life and surface finish requirements

Drive yield improvement, scrap reduction, and cycle-time optimisation across all PTFE seal operations

2.   Spring Energiser — Design Input, Selection & Assembly

Understand and apply the engineering principles behind spring-energised seal performance: energiser load vs. deflection, lip contact stress, friction, and operating envelope

Work across the three principal energiser types:

Canted coil springs (helical coil set at an angle) — highest versatility, consistent load over wide deflection range; specify wire diameter, coil pitch, cant angle, and coil OD/ID to achieve target spring force

Cantilever / finger springs (stamped metal fingers) — lower friction, suited to light-load and cryogenic applications; manage spring leg geometry, number of fingers, and free-height tolerances

V-springs / ribbon springs — compact, suited to narrow groove designs; specify leg angle, material thickness, and width

Select energiser material based on media and temperature: 316 SS (standard), Elgiloy / Phynox (high stress / corrosive media), Hastelloy C-276 (strong acids/chlorides), Inconel 718 (high temperature), titanium (lightweight / galvanic isolation)

Oversee spring forming, heat treatment (where applicable), and dimensional inspection (free height, spring constant, load at deflection)

Manage the complete energiser installation process into the PTFE lip groove — correct orientation, pre-load, and retention — without damaging the seal lip geometry

3.   Fluoroplastic Materials & Compound Selection

Work with the full range of PTFE grades and filled compounds relevant to spring-energised seal applications:

Virgin PTFE — chemical inertness, ultra-low friction, cryogenic service

15–25% glass-filled PTFE — improved creep resistance, wear resistance

Carbon / graphite-filled PTFE — higher thermal conductivity, reduced friction, dry running

Bronze-filled PTFE — high load, hydraulic service, metallic contact resistance

Carbon + graphite blend — steam, hot water, chemically aggressive media

MoS₂-filled PTFE — dry running, vacuum service

PEEK-filled PTFE — highest creep resistance, pharmaceutical / food grade

Understand the effect of filler content and sintering conditions on dimensional tolerances, surface finish, and spring-energised seal performance

Liaise with PTFE compound/raw material suppliers to qualify new grades and manage incoming material certification

4.   New Product Development & Application Engineering

Collaborate with design and sales teams to translate customer application data (shaft speed, pressure, temperature, media, surface finish) into correct seal profile selection and spring energiser specification

Support DFMEA/PFMEA, prototype machining trials, and first article inspections (FAI) for new profiles or new material combinations

Design and evaluate cross-section profiles: lip angle, heel geometry, interference fit on shaft/bore, gland depth and width, back-up ring requirements

Develop and validate seals for demanding service conditions — cryogenic (LN₂, LNG, liquid CO₂), high vacuum, aggressive chemical duty, reciprocating / oscillating / rotary service

Build and maintain a library of proven PTFE seal profiles, spring selection tables, and gland design guidelines for internal and customer reference

5.   Quality, Inspection & Standards Compliance

Ensure dimensional conformance to customer drawings and applicable standards (see Standards section below); maintain in-process and final inspection records

Manage critical measurements for spring-energised seals: lip OD/ID, groove width and depth, lip thickness, lip angle, surface finish (Ra), spring free height, spring load at installation deflection

Conduct and document material certification checks: tensile strength, elongation, hardness (Shore D), PTFE specific gravity, and compound identity

Investigate customer complaints and field returns through 8D / root cause analysis; lead corrective action and update process controls

Maintain complete traceability: PTFE compound batch, spring material cert, machining programme revision, and operator records for every production lot

6.   Team Leadership & Shop Floor Development

Lead and develop a team of PTFE machinists, assembly technicians, and QC inspectors

Write and maintain SOPs, work instructions, and CNC programme documentation for all seal profiles

Coordinate with the maintenance team to keep CNC equipment, skiving machines, and sintering furnaces at peak uptime

Liaise with stores for PTFE rod/tube/billet, spring stock, and packaging material planning

TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED

Seal Profiles & Geometries

U-cup (symmetric and asymmetric), J-lip, V-cup, delta lip, AQ (angled quarter) lip profiles

Single-acting and double-acting configurations; radial and face (axial) sealing orientations

Back-up rings, anti-extrusion rings (PEEK, PTFE-bronze), and multi-lip stack arrangements

Lip interference and contact band design for different shaft/bore surface finishes and runout tolerances

Spring Energiser Engineering

Canted coil spring mechanics: cant angle, pitch, wire cross-section (round / rectangular), installed vs. free OD, radial and axial spring force calculation

Cantilever spring geometry: number of fingers, finger width, leg length, material thickness, deflection vs. load curves

V-spring / ribbon spring: bend angle, width, coil count, installation direction

Spring testing: free height measurement, load at 50% deflection, fatigue life, stress relaxation at elevated temperature

Spring groove tolerancing: groove width, depth, and corner radii for correct spring retention without seal deformation

PTFE Processing & Machining

Compression moulding: preform weight calculation, pressing pressure and dwell, sintering profile (free-sinter vs. restrained), cooling rate effects on void formation and crystallinity

Ram extrusion: blend preparation, extrusion pressure and speed, sinter temperature, dimensional control

CNC machining of PTFE: tool geometry (positive rake, sharp edges), cutting speed and feed optimisation, chip clearance, holding fixtures for thin-walled profiles

Skiving from billet: blade setup, feed rate, temperature control, thickness uniformity

Post-machining: stress-relief baking, cleaning protocols, handling to avoid lip damage
